One of the things I really have to do as a designer is take copious notes as I go. I need to write down every detail – which cast on I used, whether I slipped a stitch knitwise or purlwise, exactly where I placed a marker – because these are the details that I might not remember later that someone else needs to finish their project.
It’s also something I do a lot when I’m knitting from a pattern.
Some patterns won’t call for a particular cast on, for example, and that means making a choice. So of course I want to note down those choices, so that I can learn from them and make better informed ones next time.
That’s where my journal comes in. I have a beautiful gold Filofax notebook where the pages can be taken out and moved around. I use it for all my crafting notes and it’s my indispensable reference.
I’ve put together a template page that I print off and use in my notebook, just to remind myself of the important things to note down. I made one for knitting projects and one for crochet, and I’m sharing them so that you can use them if you’d like.
They’re designed for A5 size and have a wide margin on the left so there’s space for your favourite binding.
