How to Knit a Folded Hem
To knit the Hadleigh camisole top, I used the long tail provisional cast on. When it was time to create the folded hem, it looked like this:
The first step is to look at the inside of your work along the cast on edge. Find the first (rightmost) stitch on your left hand needle and follow the column of stitches down to the cast on edge, flip the work over, and look for the very first purl bump – the one wrapped around the waste yarn.
Pick this loop up and, folding your work so that the wrong sides are together, put it on your left needle, ready to knit.
You should immediately see the knitting on your left hand needle look folded.
This is a good time to unpick the yarn from the provisional cast on. I used a spare DPN for this, as it was easier than using my fingers and less risky than using the needles holding my live stitches.
Next, work a k2tog, knitting together the loop you just picked up with the first stitch from your left hand needle. The picture below shows the right hand needle being inserted through both stitches on the left hand needle, in the usual way.
Repeat this process along (or around) your work, until all cast on stitches have been picked up, untied, and knit together. If you have a long length to do, you might find it helpful to snip the cast on scrap yarn, so you don’t have to pull as much through each time.
After working around all my stitches, I had a beautifully neat folded hem.
